Palos Verdes Estates
Current Weather Information

Montemalaga is the locale above Lunada Bay and North of Rancho Palos Verdes to the Malaga Cove area near La Venta Inn and has many of the largest homes on the peninsula. The lots in Montemalaga are typically among the largest in Palos Verdes Estates. Montemalaga is the highest elevation (up to 1380') in Palos Verdes Estates. Allende El Mar (also known as New York Hill) is a development of 30 luxurious custom homes on a hilltop with a 1/4 mile entry roadway (Paseo la Cresta) along a canyon hillside. Most of the new homes are being built in Montemalaga and are generally very large and range up to 39,000 square feet.

The Zurita school site (10.45 acres) is currently used for organized youth baseball games. There once were small commercial districts planned for Coronel Plaza and Montemalaga Plaza that were changed to residential. Montemalaga Elementary school is located in this area.

Valmonte is the locale East of Malaga Cove bordered by the city of Rolling Hills Estates on the South  and the Hollywood Riviera of Torrance on the North and East. This area is known for the dense Eucalyptus grove throughout most of the city and has many older smaller homes. The Palos Verdes Estates 'gatehouse' (known as the Tower House and Mirlo Gate) is located in Valmonte on Via Valmonte at the border with Torrance. The Tower House is a two story 15 foot diameter round building with 18 inch thick walls, and has been rented for many years. At one time Via Valmonte was also Hawthorne Blvd., prior to the extension of Hawthorne directly South through the peninsula and originally was named Via Mirlo.

The Palos Verdes public horse stables are located at the Northeast area of Valmonte. The municipal stables once had been located across from the east end of the golf course and trails went through the city and onto the beach. There also were plans for a beautiful Spanish mall at the east end of Valmonte at Valmonte Plaza, that never materialized due to the great depression.
